Accessibility and Navigation information

Background

Although originally created at The University of Manchester, the website and database for this project are now being developed and maintained at the University of Nottingham. Both of these institutions are committed to providing websites which are accessible using assistive technologies such as talking browsers, screen readers and PDAs. To do this, we aim to follow certain guidelines recommended by the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative). This site adheres to Level Double-A of the W3C-WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, and is designed in HTML and CSS conforming to the associated W3C standards. We have checked the site using WAI validators for HTML and CSS and UsableNet's LIFT Accessibility Checker version 1.4.1. We will continue to work to make all our sites more accessible. If you encounter any accessibility issues while using our site, please email: teri.browett@nottingham.ac.uk.

The site has been tested in Netscape 4.7, 6.2 and 7.0, in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and in Opera 7.11. All pages should render in older browsers, although they will not look exactly as intended. However the actual content of the pages should be accessible across a wide variety of platforms.

Site Accessibility Information

In most browsers, you should be able to navigate through the links on our pages by using the TAB key (and hitting the return/enter key to select the one you want). The main navigation links are ordered with a 'tabindex' attribute and will follow in a logical sequence. The links in the main content area will come after the navigation links and will follow the order in which they appear.

A 'skip to content' feature specifically designed for screen reading software is provided just before the navigation bar on every page in order to enable users to skip directly to the content of the page.
